One year ago today, a small group of students at the University of California released a proposal that would fundamentally change the way in which their university is funded. By eliminating tuition and instead having graduates of the university contribute a small percentage of their income for a set time period, the university would ultimately receive the adequate funding it needs to function under continued state divestment.

Since its release, our proposal garnered international press attention for its innovative solution, developed by students, for students. The proposal influenced the way in which governments and institutions think about funding higher education, and it continues to have an unprecedented impact on conversations about the future of universities across the United States and abroad.

Despite the proposal’s widespread influence, many problems still remain. Today, we continue to work on issues of higher education funding, developing even bigger and broader solutions than the UC-centric proposal released in 2012.

Within the next few months, our student-led organization will release proposals with the goal of fundamentally changing the way in which institutions of higher education are funded in California, and across the United States.

Be on the lookout for our future public releases. If you would like to receive a press release when our new work is ready for primetime, please send an email with contact info to press@fixuc.org.

Stay tuned… more fixes are coming soon.

This morning, Fix UC President Chris LoCascio presented an update on Fix UC to the UC Board of Regents at their meeting at UCSF. He announced the release of the updated proposal, which includes a capped second model and the outline of a federal collection system. A new, expanded data report has also been released in conjunction with the latest proposal version.

The next steps for Fix UC will involve working with the federal government and UCOP to explore a collection system through the IRS that the UC and other American institutions can use to collect funds from graduates in the United States and abroad.

In addition, we are proud to announce our next project, Fix CSU. We are hard at work adapting the UC Student Investment Proposal for the California State University system, and plan to release it in the coming months following a consultation process with CSU students and officials. Progress on that project will be published on FixCSU.org.

Keep up to date with Fix UC developments via this site, Facebook and Twitter.
