About
In the spring of 2011, California and its public universities were faced with a budget crisis unlike anything in recent memory. In response, the state substantially divested in the University of California. Faced with a huge budget shortfall, the UC regents initiated broad cuts and drastically increased tuition to get the system through the year.
That April, after publishing editorial after editorial on the subject of the budget cuts and their impact on students, the editorial board of the Highlander newspaper at UC Riverside began developing an out-of-the-box, long-term solution for the University of California that addresses its most fundamental shortcomings. Over the following nine months, members of the Highlander worked on the proposal with the eventual goal of presenting it to the regents as a realistic plan to fix a broken system. Along the way, we realized this effort was much larger than we had anticipated, and thus employed the help of student leaders at UCR and across the UC system.
By January 2012, we had arrived at what we feel is the new way forward for one of the most prestigious public university systems in the world. We worked for countless hours to come up with a comprehensive plan that addresses the unique needs of the students, the university and the state.
The UC is broken, and we have found a way to fix it. On behalf of the students who helped create this proposal, and everyone who has and ever will attend the University of California, I ask that you show your support for the future of this great system. Whether you are a student, faculty member, administrator or a concerned citizen, please sign the petition, spread the word and help let the regents know that it is time to mend our university, once and for all.
